Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) – Lagos Chapter






The Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) was founded in 1957 as a non-political, non-religious, and not-for-profit professional association. With a humble beginning of 16 members, the association has evolved into a robust organization boasting a membership exceeding 15,000. Organized into 36 State branches and the Federal Capital Territory branch at Abuja, STAN has played a pivotal role in shaping science education in Nigeria.


Vision: To be at the forefront of promoting excellence in the teaching and learning of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through culturally-relevant, innovative, and transformative models, addressing regional development challenges.


Mission: To cultivate a cadre of innovative and transformative teachers who inspire learning in STEM subjects. This will be achieved through the delivery of a range of engaging, contextual, and technology-mediated teacher professional development programs, academic conferences, science fairs and workshops. These programs aim to address regional development challenges and foster the development of 21st-century skills and leadership.


Objectives STAN's objectives include offering unique STEM training, implementing transformative teacher development for regional challenges, and fostering 21st-century skills. The association aims to empower teachers through leadership opportunities, enhance collaboration among science teachers, and keep them updated on science and industry developments.


Achievements: STAN has successfully organized national workshops through its fifteen subject panels, covering areas such as Agricultural Science, Basic Science, Chemistry, and more. These workshops are rotated among the various States of the Federation, facilitating widespread engagement and knowledge dissemination.


As STAN continues to grow and evolve, it remains committed to its vision of promoting excellence in STEM education and preparing teachers to meet the challenges of a dynamic world. The association's dedication to its mission ensures that it plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of science education in Nigeria.
